Newspaper agent killed as truck rams six shops in Poinguinim

Tension ran high in Poinguinim on Wednesday night when an inter-state truck rammed into six shops in Poinguinim bazaar, killing a 50-year-old newspaper agent from the village.
According to sources, the truck (TN-33 AD 9701) was heading towards Karwar, when the vehicle rammed into shops at Poinguinim Bazaar at about 9 pm on Wednesday.
One Ulhas Painginkar (50), who was reportedly closing his shop for the night, was mauled by the truck, which went on to hit five more shops on the left side of NH-17 road at Poinguinim Bazaar.
Painginkar, a newspaper agent and proprietor of Dayanand Hotel, was unconscious after the accident and was rushed to the CHC hospital at Canacona, where he was declared dead.
Sources informed that at least 3-4 people standing by the roadside saw the truck hitting the shops and approaching dangerously towards them.
They reportedly escaped just in time, thereby averting further casualties in the mishap.
A huge crowd gathered at the site demanding immediate arrest of the driver. When they noticed that the driver was nowhere in sight, an irate mob blocked the highway.
A police team led by Canacona PI Raju Raut Dessai rushed to the site and was seen requesting the agitating residents to free the highway. They, however, refused to accede to his requests till late night.
A large number of people also gathered at the CHC hospital at Chaudi, on hearing the news of the death of Painginkar.
