MMC conducts early morning raids on encroachment

Drives away those selling fish, vegetables, fruits and bakery products at SGPDA wholesale fish market

MARGAO: After conducting late evening raids for over a week, the anti-encroachment squad of the Margao Municipal Council conducted a similar drive Thursday early morning.
The drive was held near SGPDA wholesale fish market against illegal vendors who had encroached on the road. The vendors were removed by the MMC team.
There were complaints from villagers of the coastal belt and many others against the illegal vendors who sell fish, vegetables, fruits, bakery products and others goods along the road at the wholesale fish market.
MMC market inspector Anil Shirodkar, who led the raiding squad, said, “We did not seize the articles of illegal vendors during the raid, but we have asked them not come back again. If they do come back, then, their goods will be confiscated and auctioned.”
Meanwhile, MMC has confiscated around 30 gadaas in the week long drive. The confiscated cloths, plastic goods and other articles will be auctioned as was earlier decided by council. MMC chief Babita Angle has informed that the gadas and carts have not appeared again on roads and footpaths.
There have been complaints that lot of garbage has got accumulated at the wholesale fish market and it has been thrown in open space. The recent anti-encroachment drive conducted by MMC has also revealed that most of the seized gaddas do not have licences.
