MARGAO: The Goa Panchayati Raj Institutions Union has submitted a memorandum to the Governor Mridula Sinha urging her to involve the pancahyats while creating the strategy to implement the Swachh Bharat campaign of the prime minister of India in Goa.
“We are sure your Excellency has already thought on the logistics for effective implementation of the scheme and also decided on the strategy to put the necessary mechanisms and system in place,” said Union convenor Santan Rodrigues.
“There would be a need for an awareness campaign across the State followed by the involvement of grass root level workers via the panchayat bodies, making each panch personally responsible for the cleanliness in his/her ward, obviously, along with necessary financial support,” added Rodrigues.
The Union stated that the main purpose of writing this letter is to apprise the Governor that they are equally interested in the scheme and to assure that they would not hesitate to do their bit if and when needed.
“What we would like to emphasize here is that unless there is complete transformation of culture of our people towards cleanliness first in our houses, then in our surroundings, then in the wards and the whole village, there cannot be success because the cleanliness drive is unrestricted in time and any amount of manpower would be too less to achieve the objective,” added Rodrigues.
The Union further wished the Governor good luck and success in her endeavour to make Goa clean and added that maintaining cleanliness of the State had become a curse which defied successive governments to the extent that even the villagers have not been able to identity suitable dumping sites for garbage.
