PANJIM: In a letter to the government, president of the Quraishi Meat Traders’ Association Manna Bepari has sought permission to operate within the municipal market areas in Goa as meat and poultry products are part of the essential commodities.
“We are an association of traders, dealing in the sale of essential food commodities such as meat, mutton and chicken for our livelihood. On account of the rise in cases of COVID during the second wave, our members kept the said shops closed during the month of May, 2021. However, as now there is a decline in the cases and also as it has been a month without any trade for sustenance, our members sought to open and operate their said shops dealing with essentials within the hours permitted by the state of Goa,” said Bepari.

He said, “Our members were prohibited from doing so by the municipal market inspectors in view of purported orders of the respective Collectors, which shall hereinafter be referred to as purported orders.”
“The purported orders were not shown to our members and they are not aware of any orders prohibiting the operation of stores dealing with essentials within the municipal markets in the state of Goa. If there are any such orders, copies of the same may be made available to the undersigned association,” the Association appealed.
“There are about 2000 people in Goa dependent on this trade and their livelihood is at stake,” Bepari said and requested the State government to allow them to operate in the municipal markets at the earliest.
