PANJIM: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday demanded closure of units at Pissurlem Industrial Estate that pollute the environment and water bodies.
This demand was made an AAP delegation through a memorandum submitted to Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB).
“This memorandum was a follow up after the AAP team visited the site in Pissurlem on Saturday along with Dr Joe D’Souza, retired professor of Goa University and former consultant to GSPCB,” AAP leader Sitaram Gauns said .
He said that earlier in the day, D’Souza and an aggrieved farmer from Pissurlem, Manohar Parab highlighted the plight of Pissurlem farmers to the GSPCB officials.
He added, “On August 4 not only was Pissurlem under pollution but the affluent and the toxic material had reached Haravalem Waterfalls and threatened the livelihood of farmers and endangered tourists. Industries are illegally draining out pollutants through open drainage into the fields and contaminating the soil.” He further said that in the last one year AAP has been monitoring the performances of the industries as well as the functioning of the Board and is now forced, in public interest, to ask Pollution Control Board to issue a notice to the erring units asking why they should not be closed down.
AAP also demanded that GSPCB furnish all inspection reports for last three years related to the units consequent to their issuing the show cause.
