MARGAO: LACARS (Literary and Cultural Association of Rachol Seminary) in collaboration with the Goa Academy will organize its yearly ‘Sammelan – Amchem Daiz – 8’ on the February 21, 2013, from 9 am to 5 pm in the Seminary Auditorium.

The morning session will consist of paper presentation on the topic, Eduardo Jose Bruno De Souza: Konknnik Yogdan (Contribution to Konkani) chaired by Prakash Parienkar and the Chief Guest will be Dr Harischandra Nagvekar. The evening session will comprise ‘Folk Tales Telling Competition’ for the surrounding high schools. Dr. Jayanti Naik will be the chief guest on this session.
All Goa solo dance contest
MARGAO: Bal Navanatya Samaj, Assolna, will hold its all Goa solo dance competition on February 20 at 6.30 pm at Assolna Bazaar. The competition will be held in the age groups for below eight years and eights years and above. The first three winners will be awarded cash prizes of Rs 3,000, Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000 respectively. Hot-mixing of roads inaugurated
MARGAO: Benaulim MLA Caitu Silva on Monday inaugurated hot-mixing of roads in the four villages of Cavelossim, Carmona, Orlim and Varca. The MLA lit candles and later broke the sacred coconut at Cavelossim to mark the inauguration of the work estimated to cost Rs 80 lakh. The inauguration was done in the presence of the Sarpanchas of all the four village pancahayts.
Cash, gold pendant stolen at Porvorim
PORVORIM: Cash and gold pendant worth Rs 50,000 were stolen from a house at Janki Niwas, Porvorim. According to Porvorim Police, Shabani Prabhudesai complained that some persons entered his house by breaking open the window on Monday sometime between 12 am and 5.20 am, and stole cash of Rs 25,000 and a gold pendant (8 grammes) worth Rs 25,000. Police is investigating the case.
Theft of centering plates at Pirna
PORVORIM: Centering plates worth Rs 50,000 were stolen from Desaiwada-Pirna in Bardez. According to Mapusa Police, Santosh Sawant complained that burglars stole 38 centering plates worth Rs 50,000, which were kept in his compound. Head Constable Vilas Teli is investigating the case.
Pedestrian dies in mishap
OLD GOA: An unidentified pedestrian died after he was knocked down by a speeding goods carrier along the Old Goa by-pass road near Merces circle. According to Old Goa Police, the accident occurred on Sunday when the pedestrian, aged about 40 years, was knocked down by the unidentified goods carrier, which was proceeding from Merces circle towards Old Goa. The vehicle driver fled from the site. Police said the seriously injured pedestrian was rushed to GMC, where he succumbed to injuries. PSI Sagun Sawant is investigating the case.
Two tourists saved at Palolem, Ashwem
PANJIM: Two tourists were saved by lifeguards in separate incidents at Palolem and Ashwem beaches. According to reports, about six tourists were swimming in non-swim zone at Palolem beach despite lifeguard’s advice to move to a safe swim-zone. After some time, a huge wave hit the group and Manish Mishra (22) from New Delhi got pulled. Lifeguards rushed to his aid and rescued him. At Ashwem beach, a couple was swimming in a non-swim zone. After a while, Anchita Gosavmi (27) from Jammu & Kashmir felt sudden change of water level and panicked. Lifeguards rushed to her aid and brought her ashore.
Trio held for impersonating as ‘cops’
CANACONA: Canacona Police arrested three persons, including a staff of a Colva-based travel agency, on charges of impersonating as “cops” and threatening security guards and guests in a hotel in Palolem. According to Canacona Police, Chirag Lakhani, Sainath Parab and Rashid, all from Vasco, entered the hotel at Palolem beach in the wee hours of Monday and started to misbehave with the security guards and other hotel guests. Lakhani, who was later identified as a staff of the travel agency at Colva, along with other two accused impersonating as “cops” began to threaten the security guards and guests, informed police. Acting on the complaint, all the three accused were arrested and booked under the law for impersonation as police and issuing threats to others. Police is investigating the case under the guidance of PI Harishchandra Madkaikar.
6 drivers held for transporting sand
PONDA: Ponda Police arrested six truck drivers on charges of carrying sand along the Marcel-Ponda route in the wee hours of Tuesday. Police have also attached six trucks in connection with the case. According to Ponda Police, the incident took place at about 2 am and the sand was being transported from Marcel to Canacona. The drivers were released on bail, however the trucks are in police possession.
Fishing nets gutted at Ribandar
OLD GOA: Fishing nets and other fishing items worth Rs 50,000 were destroyed in a fire at Ribandar on Tuesday.
According to Old Goa Police, Luis Cardozo (34) from Ribandar Patto complained that his fishing net and other fishing items were gutted in the fire at about 4.30 am. The complainant further stated that the cause of fire was due to short circuit from the high tension electricity wires passing through the site. Old Goa Police is investigating the case.
Chain thefts in Panjim, Agassaim
PANJIM: Chain snatchers possibly from the same gang are again lurking in and around the capital with two incidents of chain snatching being reported in Panjim and Agassaim, in a span of just an hour Monday. Durga Gaonkar, resident of Ribandar was robbed of her gold chain worth Rs 1.14 lakh when two unidentified persons on a motorbike snatched it and escaped, in front of Corporate Bhavan at Patto. The incident occurred at about 9am. About an hour later, another woman Smita Chodankar was robbed of her gold chain amounting to Rs 1.30 lakh in a similar modus operandi at Goa Velha. The bikers were not identified but they were seen on a Black Splendor. The distance between the two places is about 10 kms, and hardly 15 minutes. The respective police stations at Panjim and Agassaim have registered separate offences against unknown robbers. SDPO Umesh Gaonkar said they will ask for details from each police station on such incidents. “We will try to ascertain similarities between the other chain snatching cases with the present two cases. Unless we work on those details, we cannot establish whether it is of an organized gang or separate incidents,” he said speaking to Herald.
Dalit Sanghatana calls on CM
PANJIM: Chairman of Dalit Sanghatana Shambhu Bhau Bandekar along with other office bearers called on Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar and requested him to look into the pressing demands of Scheduled Caste Community in Goa.

The Dalit Sanghatana submitted a memorandum of demands and requesting an increase in percentage of reservation for SCs in government jobs from two to five per cent to reduce the ever-increasing unemployment in this Community.
Nutrition and health course ends
PANJIM: The Community Food and Nutrition extension unit of Ministry of Women and Child Development, at Porvorim recently organised a two-day orientation training course in nutrition and health at Verla Canca.
The programme was organized in coordination with Godavari Self Help group, Verla Canca.
Sarpanch, Mohan Dabale who was the chief guest, stressed on a balanced diet for physical and mental development and appealed to the trainees to pass on the message of a healthy diet among the ladies.
Earlier, Sandip Banaulikar, demonstration officer, Food and Nutrition Board, also spoke.
During the course, different lectures on diet for pregnant women, nursing mothers, for pre-school children, low birth weight babies causes and consequences and prevention, growth monitoring, nutritional deficiency disorder, personal hygiene, immunisation, role of ICDS in nutrition and health were delivered by experts like Dr Anthony Valadares, Dr Raksha Borkar, Sr D’Cunha, Navnath Kerkar, Savita Paranjape, Mukhya Sevika, Sandip Banaulikar and Nita Rane.
At the valedictory function, Amol Morajkar, Director, Goa State Udyogic Sanstha was the chief guest, who distributed the certificates to the trainees.
YMCA Counselling Centre opened
PANJIM: The inauguration of YMCA counselling and wellness centre was held at YMCA International Goa recently. Luigi Ferrao, the President of the Goa YMCA deliberated on the project details.
DGP Mr Kishan Kumar, who was the chief guest, inaugurated the counselling and wellness centre.
Ms Farida D’ Silva Dias, Adv Joseph Vaz, Chairman of Western Region of YMCA (Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat), Adolph Castellino, Neetu Mehrotra and Urvita Bhatia also addressed the gathering.
The centre will deal with cases of individuals, couples, youth, drugs, narcotics-related issues and families. Regular workshops will be organized on topics like effective communication, mental health, terminal diseases etc.

Painting expo at KA
PANJIM: The hearing impaired students and individuals with special needs of Goa will exhibit and sell their drawings and paintings.
The inaugural function of the ‘Painting Exhibition’ will be held on February 21, at the Art gallery, Kala Academy, Panjim, at 9:45 am.
Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar will be the chief guest, Vishnu Wagh, Kala Academy Chairman and Calangute MLA, Michael Lobo will be the other guests.
Storytelling programme in city
PANJIM: Institute Menezes Braganza, Panjim, will organise a workshop and recitation of storytelling programme on February 22, from 9:30am onwards in its hall.
Well-known writers in Konkani, Marathi, Hindi and English ~ Mukesh Thali, Nayana Adarkar, Poornima Kerker, Anil Shankhwalkar, Vithal Gawas and Dr Vrushali Mandrekar, will recite their poems.
Noted writer Gajanan Jog has been invited to speak on the art and techniques of storytelling. Sheela Kolambkar will preside over.
Hour of adoration
PANJIM: The Catholic community all over the country will dedicate an hour of adoration to the Pope Benedict XVI and his pontificate at 6.30 pm on February 22.
According to reports from asianews.com and the official website of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI), this initiative “is being launched by Cardinal Oswald Gracias, Archbishop of Mumbai and president of the CBCI, who chose the feast of the Chair of St Peter to express the deep gratitude of the Church in India to the Holy Father.”
On Friday, at 6.30 pm, every Christian institution, convent and monastery will dedicate an hour of adoration to the pope, who has announced his decision to step down on February 28.
According to Cardinal Gracias, Benedict XVI has addressed on several occasions and in different ways issues dear to India and Asia in the eight years of his pontificate.
Session on Christian Ethics
PANJIM: The Jesuit Fathers of Pedro Arrupe Institute, Raia will organise a free interactive session on ‘Christian Morality and Ethics’ at the institute on February 24, from 9 am to 1 pm (inclusive of the Eucharist and lunch) for youth and young professionals aged between 21 to 35 years. Questions on ethics pertaining to youth will be discussed.
Dr Nikam invited for seminar
PANJIM: The Goa state branch of the Homoeopathic Medical Association of India has invited Dr Amarsinha Nikam to a seminar in Goa for the first time.
He will discuss cases of mitral stenosis, brain tumour, cerebral haemorrhage, AIDS, myocardial infarct and Riley day syndrome and the effect of homoeopathy.
A Pune-based homoeopath, Dr Nikam runs Asia’s only private homoeopathic hospital, Aditya Homoeopathic Hospital and Research Centre.

Honda school prize distribution held
VALPOI: The annual prize distribution function of Government High School, Honda, was held recently in the school premises.
Honda Sarpanch Urmilla Mainkar was the chief guest of the function. The students presented a variety of entertainment programmes on the occasion.
PTA Chairman Krishna Thakur and Headmistress Sheetal Kadam gave away the prizes to the students of the high school and school complex primary schools.
Kshama Gawas presented the annual report. Rajani Naik, Pankaj Gaonkar, Kala Halarnkar and Vijaya Dessai also spoke on the occasion.
Damodar College prize distribution
PANJIM: The annual prize distribution of VVM’s Shree Damodar College of Commerce and Economics was held at G R Kare Hall at the Vidya Vikas Mandal Campus recently.
The chief guest was Prof Satish Shetye, Vice-Chancellor of Goa University. President of Vidya Vikas Mandal, Ramnath G Kare welcomed and briefly narrated the glorious forty years of service rendered by the mandal to the people of Goa in general and people of Margao in particular. Kare said that the Mandal is running various institutions and offering courses for students to choose according to their needs. The general secretaries of Students’ Council, Cultural Council and Gymkhana presented their reports highlighting various activities conducted in the college. Principal Dr I Bhanu Murthy presented the annual report for 2012-13 highlighting various activities carried out by the faculty, departments, Students’ Council, Cultural Council, Gymkhana, NSS, NCC and Students’ Placement Cell. The top three B Com students were Swati Bhat, Priti Paigankar and Ruby Venecia Pacheco.
The most studious student trophy was bagged by Clency Coutinho and most outstanding student trophy went to Garima Vasudeva while the most coveted Damodar Ratna trophy was awarded to Sushant Nandkishore Harite. Gopalkrishna Kondi, senior associate professor of the college proposed the vote of thanks.
