PANJIM: Goa’s Dr Satish Kudchadkar and Dr Sicletica Rebello brought home bronze medals on the penultimate day of the championship underway at Multipurpose Stadium, Peddem, in mixed doubles 60+ category, completing an outstanding performance at the Yonex-Sunrise All India Masters Ranking Badminton Tournament 2019.
Easily the oldest pair in this championship, Sicletica at 81 and Kudchadkar at 74, displayed exceptional physical and mental strength to secure a podium finish.
Meanwhile, Dr Kudchadkar moved into the final of Men’s 70+ age category, where he will play Mizoram’s Zokima F. In the semi-finals, Dr Kudchadkar caused a major upset by knocking out top seed Jairaj G. from Karnataka in straight sets, winning 21-18, 21-15.
It was an eventful day for Dr Kudchadkar, who won another bronze in Men’s doubles 70+ age group. In the quarters, Dr Satish Kudchadkar along with his partner Murali M.D. from Karnataka knocked out number two seeds George Alexander M. / Mohan Murari Lal Srivastava 18-21, 21-17, 21-14.
In the semi-finals, they went down fighting to the Karnataka pair of Mallikarujuna Rao P. and Lokanath T. B, losing with a slender 21-19, 21-19 score line.
In other results, Goa’s Tanaji Sawant reached the quarter-finals in men’s 65+ singles. In men’s 65+ doubles, Tanaji and Peter Tellis also made it to the quarters. Pradeep Dhond and Jeffrey D’ Souza reached the quarters in men’s doubles 65+ while Jeffrey along with Juliana Colaco lost in the quarter finals in the mixed doubles 65+ category.
