PANJIM: The Goa unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) unit on Monday protested at the Porvorim Police Station demanding that the person who had assaulted a prominent doctor at a private hospital in Porvorim last week, be arrested immediately.

The delegation also met Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and DySP Edwin Colaco. The doctors have demanded that the accused be arrested by Wednesday morning, failing which they will decide on the further course of action.
IMA Goa president Dr Vinayak Buvaji said the doctors were bound to be protected under Goa Medicare Act, 2013.
The doctors added that they are protected under the Medicare Act, 2013 but the Police Department was not implementing the law.
They lamented that while a complaint had been lodged and an FIR was already filed, however the accused was allegedly allowed to go despite being called at the police station.
“We are cultured but at the same time, we want to inform the police that we can go for a total strike, if no arrest is made,” warned Dr Dattaram Desai.
Dr Saidutt Kuvelkar reiterated that the doctors will go on a strike, if the accused is not arrested.
The doctors said the bad precedent that has been set can create fear in the mind of some doctors to work under such circumstances where they can be assaulted and no action taken. They asserted that a better precedent has to be set to prevent people from assaulting doctors and healthcare workers.
DySP Colaco assured to arrest the accused immediately. The IMA Goa delegation met Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and submitted a memorandum. The CM assured them that he has personally instructed police to take stern action against all the accused.
