AGENCIES, ODISHA: Goa University miss out on podium finish after losing the third place match to Guru Nanak Dev University,Amritsar, 1 -3 in the Women’s Football at Khelo India University Games, Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
Goa University have themselves to blame as they created many chances before half time but converted only one through Karishma Shirvoikar in the 34th minute.
After the break, GNDU kept pressing for an equaliser and were rewarded with a goal in the 66th minute. Trying to regain the lead and attacking, Goa suffered a set-back when a strong drive from GNDU forward bounced awkwardly to beat Goa’s keeper Ashoka Gadekar to give GNDU 2-1 lead.
Fighting hard with time running out and resisting the strong physical play of their Punjab opponents, Goa University conceded the third goal in the closing minutes of the match.
Though finishing without any medal, the Goan girls won praises and appreciation from their opponents, coaches and spectators for the attractive brand of possession and passing football they exhibited throughout the Khelo India Games.
