PANJIM: After almost four months Crime Branch has zeroed in on three suspects in the murder of history sheeter Vinayak Karbotakar who was killed in Sada Sub-Jail on January 25, and has obtained transit remand of three under trials.
Crime Branch official said that three under trails – Mohammed Sheikh, Rahul and George Fernandes – will be interrogated. “In the course of investigation we have found these suspects, which we wanted to cross verify,” a Crime Branch officer said.
Karbotkar was assaulted on January 25, 2017 by some prisoners at Sada Sub-Jail which resulted in his death. Crime Branch, which is investigating another murder in judicial lockup at Colvale, in which gangster Ashpaq Bengre was killed by Karbotkar, had then taken over this investigation. It is suspected that Karbotkar was killed as revenge for the Bengre killing.
Bengre and Karbotkar were wanted in a series of crimes in the State and outside. Bengre was also wanted by Gujarat police in a drug smuggling case and Karbotkar was wanted by Maharashtra Police. Both were on transit remand from the respective states.
