MARGAO: Responding to concerns from environmentalists and citizens of Salcete, the South Goa District Collector has ordered an inquiry into the hazardous trimming and felling of trees in Margao and Fatorda. Collector Asvin Chandru has requested clarification from the Public Works Department (PWD) regarding these activities.
In recent days, extensive trimming and cutting of trees have been observed across Salcete. Environmentalists claim that the contractor involved is conducting operations hazardously, causing damage to the environment. On Wednesday, a group of environmentalists from Salcete met with the District Collector to report their observations.
Speaking to reporters, Zarinha D’Cunha said, “What is the use of planting saplings of trees and nurturing them if they are cut down or trimmed so badly? The contractor of PWD is engaged in trimming tree branches in a horrifying manner,” she stated.
D’Cunha emphasised the importance of protecting the ecosystem, especially in the context of global warming. “In the name of trimming trees, the land mafia are taking advantage, and the lack of action from the concerned authorities has further worsened the situation,” she alleged. Citizens have also claimed there are complete violations of the law during the tree trimming and felling activities.
