An argument over an iPhone purchased on EMI may not have been the only factor behind the deaths of a family of three in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar on August 21, with a relative dismissing the widely circulated account as a “rumour”.
Eighteen-year-old Kunal Chandgude had reportedly purchased an Apple iPhone on instalments but sought help from his parents after he was unable to make the monthly payments. The issue was initially cited as the trigger for a domestic dispute that ended in tragedy.

According to the account that emerged after the incident, Kunal allegedly threatened to jump from a hill and fell into a 250-foot-deep gorge along with his father, Murlidhar Chandgude, who was attempting to bring him down.
His mother, Sangita Chandgude, reportedly jumped from the cliff after witnessing the incident.
However, Sangita’s sister, Pallavi Patil, has challenged the iPhone EMI narrative, describing it as a “rumour” and saying that those spreading such claims “know nothing” about what the family went through.
Patil recorded a video message while returning home after collecting the ashes of her sister, nephew and brother-in-law.
“Sangita Chandgude, Kunal Chandgude, and Murlidhar Chandgude… they were none other than… my elder sister, my sister’s son, and my brother-in-law,” Patil said, expressing the family’s grief over losing the three members.
