VASCO: South Goa Collector Sachin Shinde has asked Deputy Collector and SDM Mormugao as well as the Deputy Collector and SDM Salcete to come out with a foolproof disaster management plan for landfills site under their jurisdiction.
The SDM Mormugao has been instructed to prepare a report suggesting prevention and mitigation plan for Sada Garbage Dump while the SDM Salcette has been asked to submit a similar report on the Sonsoddo Garbage Dump in Margao. The directions were issued in view of the recent fire at Sada Garbage dump in Mormugao which continues to release toxic smoke for the past one week.
“We had a meeting with our revenue officers from South Goa and the issue of fire at Sada Garbage Dump was discussed,” said Shinde. “Therefore, in order to meet up any eventuality due to the fire, I have asked my SDMs, who are also in-charge of sub divisional disaster management authority, to come up with plans to deal with the fire mishap at garbage dumps.”
