MARGAO: Desilting of the River Sal near the Khareband bridge is underway, with the Margao Municipal Council engaging the Water Resources Department to clear the weeds and thick vegetation to ensure smooth flow of rain water during the monsoons.
A JCB was at work near the Khareband bridge since the last two days as attempts were made to clear the thick vegetation, mostly comprising of water hyacinth weed.
This is the first time that the MMC has engaged the water resources department to clear the weeds and vegetation from the river near the Khareband bridge since the weeds used to get washed away with the force of the flood water.
MMC Chief Officer, Deepali Naik said though the WRD is taking up the works, the payments will be done by the Civic body after approval from the Directorate of Municipal Administration.
“The objective behind undertaking the exercise is to ensure smooth water flow during the monsoons. Around 100 meters of the river stretch from both sides of the bridge will be cleared of the weeds”, she said.
