MARGAO: Former Power Minister Aleixo Sequeira on Saturday said that lack of coordination between different government departments is the main reason for bad power situation.
He also said that the power sector in Goa is faced with many problems.
He pointed out that High Tension cables have practically been laid underground all over the State but in recent times other government departments and specially the public works department while digging the road end up snapping the underground power cables thus disrupting power.
“I fail to understand why the other agencies and particularly the PWD does not coordinate with the electricity department and mark where the cables are laid so that they are not cut while doing their work,” he said.
He also listed failure to trim the trees before the onset of monsoons as another factor for regular power interruptions.
He said that during his tenure as the power minister he had initiated the work of laying underground power cables because the overhead cables used to snap due to trees falling on them.
Replying to a question, he said he did not know the situation at present and the system followed by the department to collect arrears of electricity bills from government departments who have not paid them for years.
“During my time we used to make a budgetary allocation for the electricity bills in each department and whenever the department failed to pay the amount, the same would be deducted from the budget allotment of the department concerned,” he said.
Sequeira denied speculations of his return to active politics by pointing out that Camorlim is not part of Nuvem assembly constituency which he represented earlier and for which Congress denied him a ticket at the last elections to field Babashan D’Sa who has now defected to the BJP.
