PANJIM: Goa Government has notified the Witness Protection Scheme, under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 for strengthening witness safety in criminal cases.
According to Gazette notification, a dedicated protection fund will be financed through state budgets, court costs, donations, and CSR contributions. Witnesses can seek protection online or offline, with authorities required to process requests within five days of a police threat report.
Key measures include preventing face-to-face encounters, monitoring communications, identity concealment, temporary relocation, and financial aid.
Special vulnerable witness courtrooms with live links and one-way mirrors will also be introduced, states the notification.
