Margao’s Lohia Maidan to miss 60th Liberation Day celebration this year!

Beautification work incomplete; Concerned consultant needs to re-work on platform design; Contractor has re-installed Dr Lohia’s statue and Martyrs Memorial at the Maidan

MARGAO: This year Margao’s historic Lohia Maidan will miss the important celebration of 60 years of Goa’s Liberation, as the beautification work is yet to be completed.

It has been revealed that the concerned consultant needs to re-work on platform design for Dr Ram Manohar Lohia’s statue. 

It has been informed that Margao MLA Digambar Kamat has already conveyed the message to the consultants and has decided to hold a meeting to rectify the design. 

The Margao Municipal Council, besides the 18th June Kranti Din Committee had demanded that the beautification work of Lohia Maidan be completed before December 19, so that 60 years of Goa’s Liberation are celebrated in a grand way. 

However, the new look of Lohia Maidan will take days, and hence freedom fighters, besides others, will surely miss the celebration at Margao.

At the moment, the contractor has re-installed Lohia’s statue and Martyrs Memorial at the Maidan. 

“Yes, the contractor has missed the deadline to complete the beautification works on time. However, we will manage to visit the historical place and homage will be paid to the Dr Lohia and other martyrs,” said Avinash Shirodkar, Chairman of the 18th June Kranti Din Committee. 

He expressed unhappiness with regards to the re-installation of Dr Lohia’s statue and Martyrs Memorial at the site. 

“As per the inquiry of the new beautification drawings there is need for some rectifications. Hence, the local MLA had called a concerned person to convey the message”, said Avinash.

He said that a meeting will be held with the consultant in this regard. 

“We have also suggested some rectifications pertaining to the main stage”, said Avinash.
