PANJIM: Over 2.37 lakh people will vote in the elections to the 159 wards in 11 municipal councils scheduled on October 25. The general election Code of Conduct comes into force from Friday and will continue until October 28. The notification was issued on Tuesday by State Election Commissioner Dr M Modassir.
As per the notification, the General Elections to municipal councils of Mormugao, Margao, Mapusa, Bicholim, Cuncolim, Curchorem, Quepem, Canacona, Sanguem, Pernem and Valpoi are due, consequent upon their term expiring on November 11, 2015.
Following demands from various municipalities, the government has increased the ward strength of certain councils.
The ward strength of two large municipal bodies, Mormugao Municipal Council and Margao Municipal Council has been increased to 25. The councils have 66,153 and 63,344 voters respectively.
Mapusa, with 30,834 voters has 20 wards as against its earlier 15. The municipal councils of Bicholim (11,971 voters) and Cuncolim (13,657 voters) have 12 wards each. The ward strength of Curchorem-Cacora will be 14 (15,671 voters), while Quepem will have 11 wards (10,831 voters) and Canacona (9,552), Sanguem (5,135), Pernem (4,077) and Valpoi (5,957) will have 10 wards each.
