The damaged Anmod Ghat road on the Belgaum-Goa Highway is expected to reopen for heavy commercial traffic within the next fifteen days, according to PWD officials. Satish Bhobe, Executive Engineer of the PWD NH Office in Ponda, stated that repair work on the road will be completed soon. He confirmed that government officials from various departments, along with a GEC professor, conducted an inspection. Safety railings have been installed in the collapsed sections, and all necessary safety measures, including the deployment of additional traffic police and clearing of bushes and trees, will be completed before the road opens for commercial traffic.
The PWD has requested the South Goa Collector for an extension until September 15 to complete pending works. The Anmod Ghat road was closed to heavy loaded traffic on July 5 due to massive landslides. Subsequently, the South Goa Collector issued an order giving the contractor 62 days to repair the road, a deadline that ended on September 2. During this period, essential commodity traffic was permitted, while loaded commercial vehicles were diverted to alternative routes. However, continuous heavy monsoon rains delayed the repair work on the collapsed section. The PWD had requested a two-month extension to complete repairs, citing challenging weather conditions and restricting heavy commercial traffic. Despite the previous delays, a recent inspection by officials has confirmed that repair work will be completed within the next fifteen days, allowing the road to reopen for heavy traffic. The reopening is highly anticipated by heavy traffic operators, who have been forced to use longer alternative routes via Karwar and Chorla Ghat.
