MMC Chairperson Girish Borker, accompanied by municipal inspectors and Vasco police, conducted raids on fish wholesalers at Kharewado. Fish was seized from several outlets as part of the action.
Borker explained that the presence of illegal fish sellers was detrimentally affecting the business of licensed vendors in Vasco’s main fish market. Complaints from these vendors prompted the council to take action.
“We have been receiving frequent grievances from vendors in the official market who are losing business due to these illegal sellers,” Borker stated.
Borker also highlighted the emergence of illegal markets in New Vaddem, calling for the involvement of traffic police and the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to address roadside vendors obstructing traffic.
“The increasing number of illegal fish sellers and moveable hand carts in the port town is not only creating business disruptions but also hindering traffic flow,” he noted.
The MMC chairperson urged the cooperation of all stakeholders, including law enforcement and the public, to curb the nuisance caused by these unregulated activities.
The council’s crackdown aims to support local vendors while addressing broader issues of traffic and public convenience.
