Delhi has once again emerged as the deadliest megacity for road users, topping the list of road accident deaths in 2023, according to the latest NCRB data.
The capital recorded 1,457 fatalities and 5,715 accidents, the highest among the 53 megacities. On average, four people lost their lives and at least 13 were injured every day. Bengaluru ranked second with 915 deaths in 4,980 crashes, followed by Jaipur with 848 fatalities.

The NCRB report noted that two-wheelers were involved in 622 fatal crashes, while cars caused 327 deaths. Pedestrian fatalities were also the highest in Delhi, with 159 deaths reported.
Officials cited over-speeding, poor road design, and drunk driving as leading causes. However, the Delhi Traffic Police said fatalities have slightly declined compared to previous years due to enhanced enforcement and safety measures.
