Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, strongly refuted all allegations connecting her husband to Pakistan, speaking out at a press conference on Tuesday. Angmo described these claims, which have circulated for several years, as part of an orchestrated witch-hunt aimed at discrediting Wangchuk’s work and reputation. She criticized the sustained campaign against the Ladakh-based innovator, alleging that “a narrative is being set” without any substantial evidence.
Addressing specific accusations regarding Wangchuk’s alleged attendance at events in Pakistan, Angmo clarified that the only event referenced was a United Nations conference held in February, which concerned the Hindu Kush Himalayan region. “We all know the Hindu Kush Himalaya spans eight countries, including China, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bhutan. There was nothing improper about participating in a regional conference of this nature,” Angmo stated. She also pointed out that during this event, Wangchuk had publicly praised Prime Minister Modi’s Mission LiFE initiative, underscoring his constructive contributions at international forums.

Angmo emphatically rejected the suggestion that Wangchuk held any allegiance or sympathies contrary to national interests. She argued that if questions are being raised about the presence of Pakistani nationals in Ladakh, it is the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) that must account for such security concerns. “If a Pakistani national was present in Ladakh, then the MHA is answerable for how this breach happened. Sonam is not answerable for this,” she asserted.
Over the past four years, Wangchuk has faced repeated accusations and negative speculation, which Angmo says have impacted both his social initiatives and personal life. She maintained that all charges lacked substance and served only to detract from Wangchuk’s environmental activism and efforts to bring attention to the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.
Gitanjali Angmo concluded her remarks by demanding an end to the baseless targeting of Wangchuk, calling instead for focus on the real issues facing the Himalayan region and appreciation for those working on its behalf. She urged people not to be swayed by unfounded claims and stressed the transparent, patriotic credentials of her husband.
