The war of words between the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has escalated, casting a shadow over any future collaboration between the two parties in Goa. The fragile alliance between them has ‘col lapsed’ in the State, with leaders from both parties challenging each other to a public debate to “let Goans decide who is telling the truth”. The confrontation in tensified after former Del hi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, during a public address in Goa, made al legations against certain Congress leaders, par ticularly targeting Goa Pradesh Congress Com mittee (GPCC) president Amit Patkar. Kejriwal reportedly re peated claims allegedly based on a ‘co-passenger’s’ gossip — triggering strong reactions from the Con gress camp
Responding to these remarks, Amit Patkar launched a scathing statement on social media plat–Amit Palekar, AAP Goa president form X (formerly Twitter), accusing Kejriwal of irresponsibility and political recklessness by stating: “Mr. @ArvindKejriwal, as a former IRS officer and ex Chief Minister, you should know that public statements must be based on facts — not gossip over heard from a co-passenger on a flight. Repeating base less rumours to defame me is irresponsible and unbecoming of your posi tion. My family’s mining concession leases existed for generations — much before you were even born — and were abolished by the Hon’ble Supreme Court in 2013.”

Patkar then issued a direct challenge to the AAP leadership stating: “I openly invite you to a public debate here in Goa during your two-day vis it. Let’s discuss facts, not fiction. Stop misleading Goans with gossip and show some basic decen cy before speaking about others.” When AAP Goa presi dent Amit Palekar came to Kejriwal’s defence, Patkar responded by accusing him of being the source of the alleged rumour.
Patkar said, “Mr. @AmitPalekar10, by jumping to defend Mr. Kejriwal so quickly, you’ve only confirmed what Goans already know — you were the feeder of this gossip. Now do one thing — bring Mr. @ArvindKejriwal for the debate, and you can assist and feed him there too, just as you did in this irresponsible act. He defamed me from a public platform on the basis of a traveller’s whisper — that’s not politics, that’s recklessness. I’ll bring facts. Don’t bring fiction — bring facts, and be responsible. Goa will judge who stands for truth and who works to divide the Opposition.” Accepting the challenge, Amit Palekar swiftly respond ed, stating: “Yes, @amitspatkar of @INCGoa — decide the time and place and let’s debate. I’m ready! Tomorrow, an ytime and anyplace you like.” The situation marks a significant deterioration in the relationship between the two parties, who had initially at tempted to form a united front against the ruling Bharati ya Janata Party (BJP) in Goa. However, tensions have been simmering for months, with Congress recently accusing Kejriwal and AAP of working to “weaken the Congress and indirectly benefit the BJP”. In a pointed statement, Congress alleged, “His Goa strategy seems aimed at weakening Congress, paving the way for BJP gains. The playbook seems written in Delhi, performed in Goa. If he truly opposed BJP, he would have targeted BJP instead of Congress. Everyone in Goa recog nises AAP lacks the clout to defeat BJP; AAP risks being seen as BJP’s stealth ally in Goa, and Goans won’t fall for this game.” As the political drama unfolds, all eyes are now on whether the proposed public debate will actually take place — and what revelations it might bring.
