Goa Lawyers Condemn Shoe-Throwing Attempt at Chief Justice of India, Call It ‘Disgrace to Judiciary’

Lawyers across South Goa district on Tues day strongly condemned the shocking incident in which a senior lawyer allegedly attempted to hurl a shoe at Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice B.R. Gavai during court proceedings at the Su preme Court in New Delhi. The act, which was swiftly thwarted by security per sonnel, drew widespread outrage from the legal fra ternity, who termed it an “insult to the judiciary” and “a disgrace to the legal pro fession.” Legal professionals in Goa said the act has deeply hurt the dignity of the judiciary and the legal community, emphasising that such con duct was unbecoming of a lawyer and went against the oath of professional ethics. Adv. Anacleto Viegas, a senior lawyer from South Goa, said the incident has insulted the judiciary and discredited the image of ad vocates across the nation. “Lawyers are part and parcel of the judicial system. This act cannot be tolerated under any circumstance. It is not the judges but the ju diciary as an institution that upholds our rights and sup ports our profession. If we promote such forms of vio lence, we destroy the very foundation of justice. Law yers are not supposed to take the law into their own hands,” he remarked. Spokesperson of All In dia Advocates Union Adv. Seoula Vas described the incident as “a very rude and condemnable act.” She said, “Such things must never happen. The ju diciary is the highest guard ian of the law in the country and holds the hopes of mil lions. It is a noble institution that must always be respect ed. This kind of behaviour brings shame to the entire legal profession.” Adv. Guruprasad Rage termed the act “horrible and unimaginable,” stating that it reflects a dangerous ero sion of respect for constitu tional institutions. “The Chief Justice of India is the guardian of the Consti tution, and an attack on him is an attack on the institu tion itself. Such actions must never be repeated. There are lawful means to express disagreement, but never vi olence,” he said.
