The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday arrested Shafat Ahmad Shungloo in Srinagar in connection with the 1989 kidnapping of Rubaiya Sayeed, daughter of then-Union Home Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, in Jammu and Kashmir. Shungloo’s name appeared in the chargesheet based on witness testimonies and Rubaiya’s own statements.
Rubaiya was abducted while traveling from Lal Chowk hospital to her home in Nawgaon. Two hours later, Mufti Sayeed received a ransom call confirming the kidnapping.
The Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), led by Yasin Malik (currently imprisoned for terror-funding), was linked to the operation. The kidnappers demanded the release of five militants, who were later freed. Some of them were involved in the 1999 IC-814 hijacking.
Shungloo, with a Rs 10 lakh reward on his head, will be produced before the TADA Court in Jammu.
