Dhaka, Bangladesh — Begum Khaleda Zia, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and long-time leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has passed away at the age of 80 following a prolonged illness. She died early Tuesday at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, her party announced.
Zia, who was widely expected to be a major contender in the next general election, had been receiving treatment for complications affecting her heart and lungs since her admission on November 23. She also battled pneumonia.

In an official statement, the BNP confirmed her death, noting that the national leader passed away at 6:00 a.m., shortly after the Fajr dawn prayer.
