A murder incident allegedly stemming from a dispute over masjid management has sent shockwaves through Gogol, Margao, with residents expressing deep concern over what they describe as a deteriorating law-and-order situation in the locality. The fact that the attack occurred in broad daylight has further intensified fear and anxiety among citizens.
Locals said the incident has shattered the sense of security in the area, raising questions about public safety and the effectiveness of policing. Residents claimed that disputes related to religious or community institutions, if left unresolved, are now escalating into serious criminal acts.

“This incident has left the entire locality shaken. If such a brutal attack can happen in daylight, then no one feels safe anymore,” said local resident Abdul Rahman, who has lived in Gogol for over two decades. “There were tensions regarding masjid management for some time, but nobody expected it to reach this level.”
Senior citizens, in particular, expressed alarm over the incident, stating that Gogal was once known for its peaceful coexistence.
“Earlier, even disagreements were resolved through discussion and elders’ intervention. Today, people are resorting to violence,” said 72-year-old senior citizen Suresh Naik. “This is a clear sign that law and order is weakening.”
Another local, Mohammed Ali, said the incident reflects a lack of timely intervention by authorities. “There were issues brewing for months. Complaints were made, but nothing concrete was done. If the authorities had acted earlier, this tragedy could have been avoided,” he alleged.
Residents also questioned the absence of adequate police presence in the area. “Police patrolling is hardly visible here. Criminals seem to have no fear,” said senior citizen Abdul Latif. “We demand stricter policing and immediate action to restore confidence among residents.”
Citizens have urged the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure swift justice for the victim. They stressed that those responsible must be punished to prevent further escalation of violence and to send a strong deterrent message.
Locals also appealed to the administration to proactively address disputes related to community and religious management through mediation and legal mechanisms. “Such matters should be handled through proper channels, not allowed to spiral into violence,” said a resident.
The incident has sparked wider concerns about public safety in Margao, with residents warning that continued inaction could embolden anti-social elements. They have demanded increased police patrolling, better intelligence gathering, and prompt intervention in sensitive disputes.
Residents said restoring peace and harmony in Gogol must be treated as a priority. “We want to live without fear. The authorities must act now before the situation worsens,” a senior citizen remarked.
