Sunjay Kapur inheritance battle: Priya Kapur seeks Rs 20 crore damages in fresh defamation case

In a significant development, Riya Kapur, widow of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, has approached the Delhi High Court with a civil defamation suit against her sister-in-law, Mandhira Kapur Smith. The plea marks a fresh escalation in the ongoing family dispute over the control and distribution of Sunjay Kapur’s estate. The matter adds to an existing criminal defamation complaint already pending before the Patiala House Court in Delhi, where allegations relate to statements reportedly made on social media and during podcast appearances.

In her latest petition, Priya Kapur has sought a permanent injunction to restrain further allegedly defamatory statements and has claimed Rs 20 crore in damages, citing reputational harm, emotional distress and social humiliation. The case underscores the intensifying legal battle within the Kapur family.
