Tiatr ‘O Goykara, Anink Kitlo Kall Tum Goykar?’ penned by Menino Mario Araujo, directed by Jayendranath Haldankar and presented by Machi Mogi, Cujira, St Cruz was staged on the second day of KA’s ‘B’ Group Tiatr Competition.
The curtains unfolded to a scene at the convocation ceremony of Ph.D students. Dr Greg (Cruz D’Cunha) is honoured for completing his Ph.D in Roman Konkani. While interacting with the reporters, he attributes his success to Madam Karlota Mergulhao (Sendrisha Fernandes), who guided him throughout.
In a flashback, Karlota is passionate about Konkani and kills her time reading Konkani novels at her residence. Greg, an university student steps in to seek her guidance as he wishes to complete his Ph.D in Roman Konkani.
Karlota’s grandchildren Tessie (Crysantha Pereira) and Jessie (Kleona Pereira), who have returned from the UK, step out and greet her in English.
Karlota turns furious and refuses to encourage her grandchildren to speak in an alien language. Tessie and Jessie’s parents, Robin (Anthony Fernandes) and Kandina (Genevieve Rodrigues) come out and there’s commotion over the language and mother tongue.
After retirement from service in teaching, Karlota dedicates all her time going through the book treasure she has in store in her house. Greg takes good advantage of Karlota and seeks all assistance from her in completing his further studies.
Bond established over a period of time prompts Greg to visit madam Karlota. There’s interaction between the two over lunch, followed by discussion about Konkani books.
But shortly, to his shock and surprise, Greg realizes that Karlota passed away six months back and all the while it was sheer hallucination. What follows next is worth the watch during the second half of the drama.
Tiatr ‘O Goykara, Anink Kitlo Kall Tum Goykar?’ penned by Menino Mario Araujo and directed by Jayendranath Haldankar focuses on various issues related to Goa and the Goans, with stress on the Roman Konkani. The entire script carries multiple historical facts, with fine performances by the artistes.
Sendrisha Fernandes as Karlota stands out in the lead role, ably supported by Cruz D’Cunha as Greg. Anthony, Genevieve, Crysantha and Kleona come together as members of a family. Joe, Sermia, Clyde and Waluscha have extended good support to the main cast.
Wilson Dias and Janice Fernandes, while serving in the institute, come together with some laughter pills for the audience. They are quite natural in their comic acts.
In the category of songs, the opening was a choral rendered by 10 singers. Solos by teen Myleene Faleiro, Kleona and Dilecta, a duo by Merlyn and Fransquinha, a trio by Sendrisha, Waluscha and Brian and a duet by Joe and Vanessa were equally good. Live music led by Vitorino and team was appealing to the ears.
The stage set designs by Kiran Naik and light designer Rohtak Mangeshkar deserve appreciation. Background music was handled by Rudik Babrekar.
