Health Minister says cancer marker testing has begun by default, a daycare cancer centre will be inaugurated soon, and an MRI machine will be operational by July-end.
Goa Health Minister Vishwajit Rane visited the South Goa District Hospital to review healthcare facilities and interact with doctors, staff members and patients to understand the challenges faced by both medical personnel and the public.

During the visit, Rane said the hospital has now commenced cancer marker testing by default, marking a significant step towards the early detection and management of cancer cases. He stated that the government is steadily working to strengthen healthcare services for the people of South Goa.
The minister also announced that a daycare cancer centre is expected to be inaugurated soon at the hospital. The facility is expected to provide greater convenience and improved treatment access for cancer patients from South Goa. He added that similar daycare centres are planned for both South Goa and North Goa as part of the government’s broader healthcare expansion strategy.
Rane further revealed that a new MRI machine will be commissioned at the South Goa District Hospital by the end of July, enhancing the hospital’s diagnostic capabilities and reducing waiting times for patients requiring advanced imaging services.
In addition, the minister said files are being processed for the establishment of a cath lab and a dedicated cardiology unit at the hospital. He noted that the initiative is being supported by specialists in orthopaedics, neurology and a cardiology team from Goa Medical College under the guidance of Dr Guru Prasad.
Emphasising the government’s commitment to public healthcare, Rane said the BJP-led government remains focused on ensuring healthcare for all and improving medical infrastructure and services across Goa.
The announcements form part of ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery in the state and provide residents with access to advanced medical facilities closer to home.
