Child was declared brought dead after being pulled from an open borewell; authorities order action against those responsible.
A four-year-old boy who fell into a 220-foot-deep open borewell in Haryana’s Ambala district was declared dead after rescuers pulled him out following a marathon 21-hour rescue operation early Wednesday.
The victim, identified as Nirvair Singh, was rescued from the borewell at around 3.40 am after an intensive operation involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the Army and local authorities. He was immediately rushed to the Civil Hospital in Ambala Cantonment, where doctors declared him brought dead.
The tragic incident occurred at around 6.30 am on Tuesday in Dhaneora village. Nirvair had accompanied his father, Manjit Singh, to the family’s fields to deliver breakfast to his grandfather, Karnail Singh.
According to family members, while his father began working in the fields and his grandfather was eating, the child wandered away to play. He reportedly noticed an uncovered borewell and began throwing soil into it. Officials believe the damp earth around the opening collapsed as the boy leaned forward to look inside, causing him to lose his balance and fall into the narrow shaft.
Hearing a loud noise, the family rushed to the borewell and repeatedly called out to the child. Villagers initially attempted to rescue him but alerted authorities after their efforts proved unsuccessful.
Senior district officials, including Deputy Commissioner Ajay Singh Tomar, arrived at the scene soon after, and a large-scale rescue mission was launched. Officials said the borewell was approximately nine inches wide and around 220 feet deep, making rescue efforts extremely challenging.
Haryana Cabinet Minister Anil Vij also visited the site on Tuesday evening to review the ongoing operation and meet the grieving family.
The district administration has directed police to initiate legal action against those responsible for leaving the borewell uncovered. Deputy Commissioner Tomar also appealed to farmers to ensure abandoned or unused borewells are properly sealed to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers posed by open borewells. Last month, a four-year-old boy in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district was rescued safely after being trapped for nearly nine hours in a newly dug borewell. In one of India’s most remembered rescue missions, five-year-old Prince was pulled to safety after spending nearly 48 hours inside a borewell in Haryana’s Kurukshetra district in 2006, an operation that captured national attention.
