The issue came into focus after a Goa-Kolhapur interstate bus was halted at Belagavi on Friday due to a headlight malfunction, causing inconvenience to passengers. Responding to the incident, Tuenkar acknowledged that the state-run transport corporation is operating under significant constraints owing to a shortage of buses, drivers and conductors.

He said 10 new interstate buses are expected to be added to the KTCL fleet next week to improve connectivity and reduce operational pressure. However, he noted that despite the addition, the corporation will still face a shortfall of around 200 buses, highlighting the urgent need to modernise and expand the fleet.

As part of its plans to strengthen public transport, KTCL also intends to induct 25 electric buses, of which 15 are expected to be operational by August. The move is aimed at improving transport services while promoting environmentally sustainable public mobility in the state.

To address the shortage of personnel, Tuenkar said the corporation will recruit 100 drivers and 200 conductors in the coming months. The recruitment drive is expected to enhance service efficiency and support the operation of the expanded fleet.

KTCL officials expressed confidence that the induction of new buses and fresh recruitment will help improve reliability, minimise service disruptions and provide commuters with better public transport facilities across Goa and on interstate routes.
