Goan Konkani rapper, lyricist and artist Amit Jaiwant Naik, popularly known as Waking Grunt, has achieved a major milestone for regional Indian hip-hop after being selected as a Voting Member of the Recording Academy, the organisation behind the prestigious GRAMMY Awards.
The Recording Academy is one of the world’s leading organisations representing music creators and professionals and is best known for presenting the GRAMMY Awards, among the music industry’s most prestigious honours.
As a Voting Member, Waking Grunt will be eligible to participate in the Grammy Awards voting process, including submitting eligible work for consideration, evaluating entries and voting on nominees and winners across various categories.
His selection marks a significant moment for Konkani music, independent hip-hop and Goan culture, giving regional Indian music a presence within an international music institution.
Waking Grunt is also being recognised as the first Konkani rap artist to be inducted as a Recording Academy Voting Member, making the achievement particularly significant for the growing Konkani hip-hop scene.
The rapper credited Goan filmmaker and Hollywood-based director Milroy Goes for his recommendation and guidance, while also acknowledging the contribution of his music producers and collaborators who have supported his journey.
The achievement highlights the growing recognition of independent and regional Indian artists on international platforms and represents another step forward for Konkani music beyond Goa’s borders.
