Why Sanju Samson Was Dropped for Zimbabwe T20Is: Report Reveals Selectors’ Reason

Sanju Samson’s omission from India’s squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe has sparked widespread debate among fans and cricket experts. However, reports suggest that the wicketkeeper-batter was rested rather than dropped, with selectors opting to test younger players during the tour. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a 15-member squad on Monday, with Shreyas Iyer named captain. While youngsters such as Prabhsimran Singh and 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi were included, Samson’s absence raised eyebrows, especially after his performances over the past year.According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, the selectors viewed the Zimbabwe series as an opportunity to assess emerging talent. Prabhsimran Singh, who impressed with consistent performances for Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL), earned his maiden India call-up as the management looked to expand its pool of players ahead of future assignments.A senior BCCI official also clarified that Samson remains part of India’s plans and has been included in the squad for the Asian Games later this year. Since he was unlikely to feature regularly in the Zimbabwe series, the selectors decided to rest the experienced batter and provide opportunities to younger players.Samson’s recent international scores of 0, 5 and 1 may not have strengthened his case, but reports indicate that these performances were not the primary reason behind his omission. The Kerala batter was one of India’s standout performers during the 2026 T20 World Cup, playing crucial knocks in the knockout stages and finishing among the tournament’s leading run-scorers.Meanwhile, Prabhsimran heads into the series after an outstanding IPL campaign, scoring 510 runs at a strike rate of nearly 169. His inclusion also provides India with a right-handed opening option alongside left-handers Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Ishan Kishan.
