BCCI Takes Stock of India’s T20I Crisis; Iyer, Gambhir Set for Performance Review

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to conduct a comprehensive review of the men’s T20I team after a disappointing run that has seen the world champions fail to win a single match in their last six outings. The review will involve captain Shreyas Iyer and head coach Gautam Gambhir once the ongoing five-match T20I series against England concludes.

India entered the new era on the back of an impressive run, having won the Asia Cup 2025 and the T20 World Cup 2026 while remaining unbeaten in 12 consecutive bilateral T20I series. However, fortunes have changed dramatically under the new leadership. India suffered a historic series defeat against Ireland before England secured the T20I series with a game to spare after taking an unassailable 3-0 lead.

The latest setback came in Bristol, where England chased down 159 in just 13.5 overs to register a dominant nine-wicket victory. Harry Brook’s unbeaten 79 and Phil Salt’s 59 overshadowed Shreyas Iyer’s fighting unbeaten 80, with no other Indian batter crossing double figures of significance. The repeated batting failures throughout the tour have emerged as one of India’s biggest concerns.

Ahead of the tour, the BCCI made the bold decision to replace T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav with Shreyas Iyer, who had earned praise after leading Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 title and Punjab Kings to the IPL 2026 final. While Iyer has shown glimpses of form with the bat, he has yet to register a victory as India’s T20I captain.

The struggles have not been limited to leadership alone. Several senior batters have failed to deliver consistently, while India have also been criticised for their inability to adapt to English conditions. In contrast, both Ireland and England have executed their plans effectively, exposing India’s tactical shortcomings.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia admitted the board was concerned with the team’s performances and confirmed that a detailed review would take place after the series.

“We are deeply concerned about the Indian team’s performance, and once this series is over we will definitely have a review with the captain and coach to understand what is going wrong and will rectify the problems soon so we can regain our stature,” Saikia told India Today.

While speculation has emerged over Gambhir’s future, the upcoming review is expected to focus on selection, tactics, team combinations and India’s roadmap ahead of future ICC tournaments.
