The Supreme Court on Tuesday came down heavily on comedian Samay Raina, accusing him of failing to honour commitments made before the court in connection with the India’s Got Latent controversy. Observing that he had “taken the court for a ride,” the bench imposed a fine of Rs 3 lakh each on Raina, Vipul Goyal, Balraj Ghai, Sonali Thakkar and Nishant Tanwar.
The comedians have been directed to deposit the fine within two weeks, failing which the penalty could be significantly enhanced. Chief Justice of India Surya Kant warned that an additional zero could be added to the amount if the court’s directions were ignored.

The bench also expressed disappointment over Raina’s conduct after amicus curiae Aparajita Singh informed the court that he had not reached out to the SMA Foundation or patients suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy despite earlier assurances. She questioned whether such conduct was befitting someone viewed as a role model by young people.
Apart from the monetary penalty, the court directed the comedians to issue public apologies, submit compliance affidavits and organise two comedy shows every month to raise funds for children affected by SMA.
The proceedings relate to petitions filed by content creators Ranveer Allahbadia and Ashish Chanchlani, along with the Cure SMA Foundation, over remarks made during two episodes of India’s Got Latent in 2025. The comments mocked visually impaired people, cross-eyed individuals and children suffering from SMA, leading to widespread criticism.
The Supreme Court has also urged Parliament to consider a dedicated law against disability-based ridicule, drawing parallels with protections available under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
The five comedians had earlier issued a joint apology in October 2025, expressing regret for the hurt caused and pledging greater sensitivity in future performances.
