A 65-year-old Congress worker died after an iron rod from a temporary tent structure fell on him during preparations for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s scheduled event at the Bannu School grounds in Dehradun, party leaders said.
According to Congress state vice-president Suryakant Dhasmana, the deceased, Amar Mehta, was supervising arrangements beneath the tent on Thursday evening when an iron rod from the structure suddenly came loose and struck him on the head, causing critical injuries.
Mehta was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to attend the ‘Chhatron ki Goonj’ (Voice of Students) programme at the Bannu School grounds on Friday. During the event, he is expected to interact with students on several issues, including alleged question paper leaks and concerns surrounding the education system.
The incident has cast a shadow over the preparations for the programme, with party leaders expressing grief over the loss of the veteran Congress worker.
