Rohit Sharma etched his name into the record books with a brilliant 138 at Lord’s on Sunday, becoming the first Indian batter to score an ODI century at the iconic venue. While the skipper deserved all the applause for his match-winning knock, an interesting behind-the-scenes story has added another twist to the memorable innings.
The bat Rohit used to score his 34th ODI hundred belonged to Mumbai teammate Shardul Thakur. The all-rounder, affectionately nicknamed “Lord” by his teammates, revealed that Rohit had earlier requested a couple of bats after being impressed with the quality of the willow supplied to him by SS Bats.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Shardul said the bat manufacturer had sent him some excellent bats, and Rohit asked if he could use a few. “We all love him and he’s given us so many joyful moments in cricket. There was no question of refusing him. I’m delighted that he scored a historic hundred at Lord’s using one of my bats,” Shardul said.
The amusing coincidence wasn’t lost on fans either, with “Lord” Shardul’s bat helping Rohit register a century at Lord’s Cricket Ground. During his commentary stint for Sony Sports Network, Shardul jokingly confirmed the story, saying he had “given India a start” while sitting in the commentary box through Rohit’s innings.
The century also arrived at a significant time for Rohit. In recent weeks, speculation over his international future had gained momentum, with rumours suggesting he could be forced into retirement. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) later dismissed those reports, reaffirming that the veteran opener remains an integral part of the national team.
