The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, the organising institute for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027, has announced that the online registration process is expected to begin in the middle of August 2026.
GATE 2027, the 45th edition of the national-level examination since its inception in 1983, will be conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and the IITs on behalf of the National Coordination Board-GATE under the Ministry of Education.

The computer-based examination will be held on February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21, 2027, in both forenoon and afternoon sessions.
One of the major highlights of GATE 2027 is the introduction of a new test paper in Robotics and Automation (RA). In addition, the Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF) paper has been converted into a sectional paper under Engineering Sciences (XE). The examination will comprise 30 test papers, with revised syllabi introduced after five years to reflect evolving academic and industry requirements.
Candidates will have the option to appear for one or two papers from the permitted combinations. The examination will be conducted only in English.
A GATE qualification enables candidates to seek admission to Master’s, direct doctoral and PhD programmes in Engineering, Technology, Science, Architecture and Humanities at institutions supported by the Ministry of Education and other government agencies, with opportunities for financial assistance. GATE scores are also accepted by several higher education institutions for postgraduate admissions and are widely used by Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and other organisations for recruitment.
To enhance security and ensure a transparent examination process, IIT Madras has announced that online registration will be integrated with DigiLocker and facial authentication. Candidates have been advised to use these features to facilitate a seamless registration process and smooth entry into examination centres.
