Activist Sonam Wangchuk on Thursday night ended his 26-day hunger strike after receiving assurances from the Centre following a series of high-level discussions. He broke his fast at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram in the presence of Union Health Minister JP Nadda and Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Dr Jitendra Singh.
The development came after a day of intensive consultations between senior government leaders aimed at resolving the ongoing standoff.

According to sources, mounting student protests across the country and growing concerns over Wangchuk’s deteriorating health prompted the Centre to expedite discussions. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is said to have chaired a nearly four-hour meeting with JP Nadda and Dr Jitendra Singh to review the situation and explore a way forward.
Sources indicated that during the meeting, the government agreed to adopt a constructive approach towards the demands raised by Wangchuk while placing his health and well-being at the forefront of its considerations.
The assurances paved the way for Wangchuk to call off his nearly month-long fast, bringing a significant development in the ongoing protests over the alleged NEET paper leak and related education reforms.
