India Face Reigning Olympic Champions Netherlands in Hockey World Cup Second Stage

India’s men’s and women’s hockey teams will face a major challenge as they begin their respective second-stage campaigns at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 against reigning Olympic champions the Netherlands.

The Netherlands, which won gold in both men’s and women’s hockey at the Paris 2024 Olympics, will provide a stern test for the Indian teams as the World Cup enters its decisive phase. With semi-final places at stake, both sides will be keen to make a strong start.

The Indian women’s team will be the first to face the Dutch, taking on co-hosts the Netherlands on August 21 at 9:30 pm IST at the Wagener Stadium. India advanced to the second stage unbeaten after recording a 6-1 victory over South Africa and playing out a goalless draw against England. They had earlier also drawn against China.

India and China will carry one point each into Pool E after sharing the spoils in their Pool D meeting. Those points could prove important as the teams battle for the top two positions and a place in the semi-finals.

Following the Netherlands clash, India’s women will face Australia on August 23 at 10:30 pm IST. The team has displayed a balance of attacking intent and defensive discipline during the tournament. The emphatic win over South Africa underlined their ability to convert chances, while the clean sheet against England showed their resilience against strong opposition.

The Netherlands, however, will offer an even greater challenge, particularly with home support behind the co-hosts. India will need to maintain its defensive organisation while taking advantage of scoring opportunities.

The Indian men’s team will begin their second-stage campaign against the Netherlands on August 22 at 7:30 pm IST. Their next fixture will be against Argentina on August 24 at 6:15 pm IST.

Unlike the women’s team, India’s men will enter the second stage without carrying forward any points from Pool D. England, who defeated India 4-2 and finished top of the group unbeaten, will carry the advantage into the next phase.

India finished second in their pool after securing a convincing 5-3 win over Pakistan. They had earlier begun their campaign with a 3-1 victory over Wales.

The win against Pakistan gave India momentum heading into the second stage, with the team producing a stronger attacking display. However, the points reset means India will have to start afresh against the Netherlands.
