A man suspect ed of being involved in the theft of a motorcycle al legedly died after he was intercepted and assaulted by a group of persons at Nuvem in Salcete on Thurs day night, turning what began as suspicion over a stolen two-wheeler into a fatal case of alleged mob violence. Maina Curtorim Police have arrested three per sons in connection with the assault and are prob ing the involvement of others who were report edly present at the scene. Police are also investigat ing whether the deceased was actually involved in the alleged theft and, cru cially, how a confrontation over a suspected property offence escalated into an assault that ended in his death.
The deceased, initial ly recorded by police as unidentified, has now been identified through Aadhaar-related details as Rama Dnyanoba Suradkar, aged around 38, although his identity and other per sonal particulars are still being verified. According to prelimi nary information, the inci dent took place at Nuvem between around 7 pm and 10 pm on August 27 after the man was alleg edly suspected of steal ing a motorcycle from the Seraulim-Colva area. The motorcycle was subsequently recovered from Nuvem and has been secured by police. Investi gators are now tracing its movements and examining how it reached Nuvem, as well as how the deceased came to be suspected of having stolen it and who first intercepted him. Police sources said the man’s connection with the alleged theft has not yet been established and re mains a matter of investi gation. What investigators are now seeking to establish is what happened after the interception.

The man was allegedly restrained by members of the group and beaten with fists and kicks. He was later taken to South Goa District Hospital, Margao, for treatment, but doctors declared him brought dead. The death has transformed the episode from an alleged theft investi gation into a criminal probe into the circumstances surrounding a fatal assault. Maina Curtorim Police registered Crime No 60/2026 on August 28 un der Sections 103(1), 189(2), 189(3) and 190 of the Bharatiya Nyaya San hita (BNS), 2023, relating to the death, unlawful assembly and the alleged acts of violence. PSI Narayan Pinge, under the supervision of PI Kapil Naik, arrested Grayson Antonio Fernandes, Domingoes alias Domnic Fernandes and Francisco Dias. Police are questioning the three arrested persons to determine their individual roles and reconstruct the sequence of events leading to the man’s death. The investigation, however, is not confined to those arrest ed.
Police are examining who first confronted the deceased, how many peo ple were present, who allegedly participated in the assault, the nature and duration of the beating, and who arranged for him to be taken to hos pital. Statements of eyewitnesses and others who may have information about the incident are also expected to be recorded. Further arrests have not been ruled out. The recovery of the motorcycle is also central to the investigation. Po lice are attempting to establish its movements from the time it was alleg edly stolen from the Seraulim-Colva area until it was recovered at Nuvem.
In the wake of the incident, South Goa Police have issued a strong ad visory against taking the law into one’s own hands, urging citizens to inform the nearest police station when they suspect criminal activity and to call the emergency helpline 112 when immediate police assistance is required. Police have stressed that suspected offenders should be handed over to the authorities rather than intercepted and assaulted. With one person dead and three already arrested, investigators are try ing to establish the full chain of events and identify every person who may have played a role in the fatal assault.
