For nearly four decades, rural women from Canacona, Balli, Morpilla, Pirni and Bethoda have been travelling to Margao to sell vegetables grown in their homes and fields, keeping a long-standing tradition alive.
Around 20 women vendors from these rural areas regularly make the journey to Margao, bringing a variety of fresh and seasonal vegetables for customers. Despite the challenges of travelling and spending long hours at the market, they continue the practice with dedication.

For many of the women, selling vegetables has been an important source of income for their families. Their earnings have helped support household expenses and fund their children’s education, contributing to better opportunities for the next generation.
The women also bring a wider variety of produce during the Chaturthi festival, when demand for traditional and locally grown vegetables increases.
Their continued presence in Margao reflects not only a decades-old livelihood tradition but also the farming knowledge and skills of rural women who continue to practise traditional cultivation methods.
