Former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal has filed an application before the North Goa Additional Sessions Court detailing the terms for his surrender, in compliance with directions issued by the Supreme Court.
The legal move follows the High Court of Bombay at Goa’s August 6 judgment, which overturned his 2021 trial court acquittal and convicted him under multiple provisions of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 376(2)(k) for rape by a person in authority. The High Court sentenced Tejpal to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a junior colleague inside a Goa hotel elevator during a 2013 event.

While the High Court initially granted him four weeks to surrender, Tejpal approached the Supreme Court seeking an exemption pending his appeal. However, a Supreme Court bench refused to grant relief against custody, directing Tejpal to surrender within two weeks to proceed with his appeal process. Following the apex court’s directive, Tejpal has now formally approached the trial court in North Goa to initiate the surrender process.
