On the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin held high-level bilateral talks to review and advance the India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. Highlighting the warm rapport between the two leaders, PM Modi and President Putin shared a car ride from their meeting venue to inspect an industrial exhibition at Bharat Mandapam.
The engagement marked the second face-to-face interaction between the two heads of state within a fortnight, following their recent bilateral discussions at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek.

Key Focus Areas: Defense, Energy, and Trade
During their wide-ranging dialogue, the two leaders assessed ongoing progress across critical pillars of bilateral cooperation. According to Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, discussions focused heavily on enhancing engagement in trade, defense, energy, space exploration, and people-to-people exchanges.
Both leaders also highlighted the inaugural “INNOPROM India” International Industrial Exhibition, held in New Delhi from September 9 to 11, as a vital platform for expanding industrial and commercial collaboration between Indian and Russian enterprises. Following their formal talks, PM Modi and President Putin walked through the exhibition floor together to interact directly with participating industry leaders and delegates.
Global Security and Diplomatic Outreach
Beyond bilateral commerce, the leaders exchanged perspectives on pressing international and regional security challenges, specifically addressing the ongoing conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region. Discussions focused on the disruption these crises have caused to global maritime trade routes, as well as the safety of Indian seafarers working in affected waters.
Reiterating India’s longstanding diplomatic stance, PM Modi emphasized that lasting solutions to global conflicts can only be achieved through sustained dialogue and peaceful diplomacy, confirming that India remains ready to support all genuine peace initiatives. Symbolizing the cultural depth of the relationship, PM Modi presented President Putin with a Russian translation of the revered Tamil literary masterpiece, the Thirukkural.
Looking Ahead: Annual Summit Invitation
Concluding the bilateral session, President Putin extended an official invitation to Prime Minister Modi to visit Russia for the upcoming 24th India-Russia Annual Summit. PM Modi accepted the invitation, with final dates to be coordinated through diplomatic channels. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining close strategic alignment amidst an increasingly complex global geopolitical environment.
