MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council (MMC) will hold the Carnival floats parade on February 27, Sunday under the theme ‘Gõychi Porompora’ (Goan Tradition).

The team headed by Agnelo Fernandes, Chief Officer, MMC will be in action for the smooth functioning of the floats parade, which will start from South Goa District Court to Borkar Supermarket, Fatorda. There will be neither Chairperson nor any councillor in the organising committee, in wake of code of conduct imposed in the State for general Assembly elections.
Addressing the media persons after the meeting pertaining to preparation of the Carnival floats parade, the CO said that they are trying to bring one float from Indonesia, as a special attraction.
“As declared by the government this year Carnival floats parades will be held only at four locations, including Margao that is on February 27. We have constituted a committee of staff from the civic body”, he stated.
He further said that the committee has decided a theme called ‘Gõychi Porompora’, and focus will be to depict the Goan traditions.
The CO also said that the committee has finalised the name of famed footballer, who is also the recipient of Padma Shri award Brahmanand Sankhwalkar as a chief guest.
“Proper arrangements will be made for the smooth flow of the traffic, and also the floats parade. All the SOPs of Covid will be followed. Floats parade will commence from 3.30 pm onwards”, said CO.
He also informed that floats depicting the liquor will be allowed in the floats parade, and this time full focus will be on Goan traditions. Nearly seven lakh of prize money will be given to the winners.
Representatives of the Tourism Department, besides Traffic Cell, Margao, and Urban Health Centre attended the meeting.
“Goa has rich cultural traditions with folklore representing 50 major folk forms. Besides rich linguistic and sociolinguistic heritage with wealth of idioms, proverbs, rich history of maritime trade and commerce and cosmopolitan lifestyle, ancient ecotheological, nature worship and ecofeminist tradition, unique socio-cultural and economic institution of Gaunkar-the comunidades”, said CO.
