PORVORIM: The State government revenue on road tax witnessed four per cent increase, while GST collection was up by 35 per cent, during the period from October to December 2019, when the tax on new vehicles was slashed by 50 per cent, Minister for Transport Mauvin Godinho told House on Friday.
The State Legislative Assembly passed The Goa Motor Vehicles Tax (2nd Amendment) Bill 2020, moved by Godinho, which was based on the Ordinance 2019 promulgated by Governor on October 17, 2019 to reduce the road tax by 50 per cent for a period of three months ending December 31, 2019. The Ordinance is ceased to operate with effect from January 1, 2020. The Bill mentioned that during the quarter I and II of the financial year 2019-20, it was observed that the revenue decreased to Rs 3.47crore and 11.17 crore respectively.
“Whereas during the Quarter II, there is an increase in revenue of Rs 3.56 crore which is in the period wherein the government introduced incentives to facilitate the automobile industry with 50 per cent tax reduction, an increase of 4.38 per cent viz-a-viz the corresponding quarter III of 2018,” the Bill stated.
It may be noted that there is considerable increase in motor car registrations from 4,559 vehicles to 8,264 vehicles during Quarter III of 2019 as against 2018.
“Similarly, the revenue collection of State GST during the similar period has been Rs 60.16 crore, as against 44.51 crore in 2018, an increase of 35 per cent,” the Bill mentioned.
Further, the House also passed another amendment to the Act, wherein the tippers and trucks involved in mining operations, are permitted to pay the tax on quarterly basis to have relief from payment of bulk tax on yearly basis at a time.
