Woman killed in tree fall at Pale

MAYEM: Her participation in rituals near a temple ended in tragedy, when a 35-year-old woman from Pali-Thane in Sattari died after a tree uprooted and came crashing down on her at Arvalem-Bicholim on Saturday morning.
The incident took place at around 11.45 am when Goraksha Gokuldas Sawant had gone to attend rituals at the Rudreshwar temple in Arvalem.
As Sawant was proceeding to the riverside to immerse some religious items, a coconut tree got uprooted due to the loose soil on account of the heavy rains and came crashing down on her.
Sawant was grievously injured and was moved to the PHC at Sanquelim, from where she was referred to the GMC hospital. She, however, died of injuries while undergoing treatment.
A Bicholim police team conducted the inquest under the supervision of PI Ninad Deulkar and the body has been sent for an autopsy at the GMC.
Meanwhile, heavy rains accompanied by strong winds led to a number of trees getting uprooted in various parts of Bicholim taluka. Trees were uprooted at Arvalem, Kudnem, Latambarcem, Mayem, Pilgao and surrounding areas.
Water-logging was also reported at many places, with affected residents blaming the PWD in Bicholim for failing to complete pre-monsoon works in the taluka.
