CoP installs buoys to provide safety for Mandovi Bridge

After about two years of dilly dallying, the Captain of Ports finally has put navigational buoys on the either side of the Mandovi Bridge to provide proper navigation to the barge masters and avoid accidents with the piers of the bridge.
It may be recalled Herald has on several occasions raised the issue of damage being caused to the Mandovi Bridge due to the barges brushing the piers while passing through. Herald had also reported that one such accident had caused a crack 13 meter deep down the pier no 13.
Following the report the Public Works Department had asked the Captain of Ports to put navigational buoys on the either side of the bridge and also ask the barge masters to carefully pass through the bridge piers.
Speaking to Herald Deputy Captain of Ports James Braganza said that the navigational buoys had been placed yesterday.
“There are four navigational buoys (two on each side of the bridge) have been placed 500 meters away from piers,” he said.
This, he said is to make sure barges pass through without brushing the piers of the bridge and causing any damage.
He said the total cost of the buoys is Rs 15 lakhs adding similar buoys will also be placed for Zuari Bridge.
