MARGAO: Dempo Sports Club players Romeo Fernandes, Pronoy Halder, Narayan Das, Allwyn George and Mandar Rao Desai are part of the 30-member squad for the Indian National Under-23 training camp starting next month in Bangalore, from July 1 to 20.
They were picked by national coach Wim Koevermans after impressive performances in the I-League.
Training under the watchful eyes of head coach Arthur Papas, these young talents have extensive experience playing in the top tier of Indian football.
“As a club we have made giant strides last season in promoting what we consider the cream of the young talented Indian footballers and the selection of our club players for the National camp further justify the process we have undertaken. All five players have very exciting futures ahead and this upcoming experience with the National team will only serve to develop them further and in return assist Dempo SC in the long term,” Arthur informed.
While the first four have earlier represented the country in age group tournaments, it will be a golden opportunity for Mandar Rao Desai to fulfill his childhood dream for playing for India.
“It’s a dream come true and I am looking forward to don India colours,” said Mandar.
The zippy midfielder was handpicked by Papas who thought he fits well into his long term plans for the club.
“Upon my arrival at the club, Mandar had yet to play in the I-League, but from the moment we began, his ability was instantly recognizable and he combines this with a burning desire that is required to be an elite footballer. We have invested a lot of time in Mandar and are very confident that he will go on to fulfill his potential representing both India and Dempo SC in the future,” said Arthur.
A delighted Dempo footballer Romeo Fernandes who helped his club to finish fourth position in the recently held I-League said he was expecting a National call after his fine performances.
Hailing from Ambelim Village, Romeo played for India in pre-Olympics qualifying 2011-12. “I knew that my hardwork and good performances in the I-League won’t go in vain. Wearing the India jersey also made me to realise what is expected at this level,” he added.
Without my teammates (Dempo Sports Club) and support of my parents, coaches and friends, I wouldn’t have been able to come this far,” modest Fernandes concluded.
The National team shall also play series of friendlies against archrivals Pakistan on August 17 and 20 in preparing for Incehon Asian Games.
